Switch the ’Stat was a stewardship program focused on recovering old thermostats, and keeping mercury out of the waste stream. The program was funded by thermostat manufacturers and Scout Environmental worked with HVAC and plumbing contractors and wholesalers in the field to collect end-of-life thermostats. Switch the ’Stat was regulated in BC and Manitoba and operated voluntarily across the rest of the country.
Between 2006 and 2016, Switch the ’Stat kept over 485 kg of mercury out of the waste stream by recovering over 190,000 mercury vessels, as well as recycling over 4,780 kg of plastic and over 1,920 kg of metal. Now called Thermostat Recovery Program, the program is administered and delivered by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada and is supported by the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating.
