Fuel Can Flip

2011

This retail-driven campaign engaged the public to bring in their old, leaky, unsafe fuel cans to any of 16 participating Home Depot stores in exchange for rebates toward safer, more impermeable Sceptre eco-Cans. In addition to the environmental impact achieved of these change-outs (130 cans collected in 4 days, and 121 new eco-Cans sold in their place) the program also impacted sales of eco-Cans — priced significantly higher than traditional fuel cans — by 1,600%. The first year of the program was designed and implemented with funding from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada, and Sceptre (the eco-Can manufacturer) as well as in-kind support from The Home Depot. Fuel Can Flip received an Emerald Award from the Ontario Ministry of Environment.
