Keep Cool

Keep Cool

Keep Cool was a market transformation campaign that encouraged individuals to permanently retire and recycle their old, inefficient room air conditioners and to adopt cleaner, more efficient cooling alternatives.

Older, inefficient room air conditioners (RACs) use 30-70% more energy than newer efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified models. The environmental impact of peak demand leads to high concentrations of smog-producing chemicals creating poorer air quality and increased greenhouse gases emissions.

The program offered participants incentives such as retail gift cards, free recycling, and free collection for their old, inefficient products. The exchanged units are recycled responsibly and the ozone depleting are properly contained by certified technicians.

  • In 2009 we collected approximately 7,200 RAC’s and dehumidifiers (estimates still TBC by recyclers.)
  • 2008 alone, 7,750 inefficient RACs were collected in Toronto, saving 3.7 MW of electricity and reducing emissions by 5,725 tonnes
  • 406 dehumidifiers and 428 RACs were collected and recycled in the Kitchener-Waterloo pilot program
  • In total, over 45,200 RACs have been retired and responsibly recycled through Keep Cool
  • Almost 30 MW and over 15,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases have been saved
